BoxUnion: Welcome to My Happy Place

Hello, friends. 👋 It’s been a minute since I’ve taken the time to sit down and finish half-written drafts and incomplete musings. Before I jump in, let me quickly put to rest the idea of “excess free time” when you work for yourself. It’s really quite the opposite. My weeks are so busy — in the best way possible. Between client work, my strong desire to travel, and personal time, it's unfortunately easy to forget about passion projects like this. If I don’t schedule time on my calendar, it’s probably not getting done.

In my defense, I have written two brand new articles; 4 Things to Help Build Your Brand When Waiting for Sales and 6 Audiences You Need for E-commerce, that you should totally go read as soon as you’re done here. But, I’m really trying to make an effort and get my websites under control and I’m planning to keep new content regularly scheduled on both. ("Good luck" wishes are definitely welcome here).

Everyday Stronger 🥊

In May of last year, I wrote a quick update on a new, “trendy” workout I tried—boxing to the beat. To be completely honest it took me months to go back again after my first class. I really enjoyed the new experience, loved the class structure, but the class whooped my butt. So I wasn’t exactly eager to get back on the bag anytime soon. After taking some time off, I tried a few more classes on my own and finally convinced Kevin to try, too. Much to my surprise, he loved the class. Finally! We found an activity we both really enjoyed and was something we could do together.

Better Together

We took a few more classes together on weekends. As we started feeling better about our form and our fitness level we became more committed to going as regularly as we could. BoxUnion’s mantra is literally “Together We Box, Together We Build” and we really took that to heart. In October, we committed to a 30-day Punch Party Challenge. For 30 days — including a combination of (very) early mornings, late afternoons and weekends — we showed up and were committed to finishing this together. One day and one punch at a time, we actually did it!

Jab, Cross, Get Hooked

Since starting almost a year ago now, we’re quickly closing in on our 50th class. We’ve taken a form & footwork class, a few private training sessions, and have made such amazing connections within the BoxU community. Boxing was never something I saw myself getting into (or Kevin, for that matter). Even after taking the first class, I didn't see it as something that was very “me” or something that I would likely continue. Having spent most of my life as a dancer, having my time as a cheerleader, and even trying my hand as a Zumba instructor for a few years, boxing definitely felt like the outlier. But I was absolutely hooked. The more classes I took, the more I realized my background in dance is what keeps me loose and light on my feet. Almost a year later, we are stronger, healthier, happier and much more confident.
